In September 2024, former Pittsburgh Penguins standouts Kevin Stevens and Matt Cullen were elected into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Both forwards propelled their teams to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, Cullen in 2016 and 2017, and Stevens in 1991 and 1992.

Excelling as a baseball player throughout high school, Stevens tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays before deciding on hockey. As a Boston College athlete, he skated for the US Olympic team in 1988. Joining an up-and-coming Pittsburgh squad, Stevens benefited from skating alongside hockey legend Mario Lemieux, and their dynamic passing and offensive attacks took the Penguins to their first finals appearance since 1973.

Stevens’ contributions included leading all teams in 1991 playoff goals (17) and scoring the game-winning goal in Game 2 of the Finals versus the Minnesota North Stars. He repeated this game-winning feat in 1992, in Game 3 of the Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. In all, Stevens ranks second among all American-born players in NHL playoff goals (46).

Rejoining the US team in 1996, Stevens earned a bronze medal with the American squad and cemented his status as a leading presence in international competition. Debilitated by an on-ice collision toward the end of his playing days, Kevin Stevens retired with 555 points, 295 assists, and 260 goals in 522 regular-season games across a storied NHL career.
